We have had several posts on social media, including the cultural changes it has had an society, along with facts and statistics. Although, what we have not discussed is your personal opinion on the world’s largest social networking site- Facebook. Facebook was originally created for students to connect with other students, but as it expanded, the market expanded. Facebook is now accessed by millions of people (of all ages) around the world. It has allowed businesses to grow through the networking and it has allowed friends to reconnect. On the other hand, Facebook has become more than a social networking site for some. People get so caught up in the site that they become addicted. They stalk people, hack accounts, and use Facebook to display sometimes TOO much personal information. Even recently, two British men were sentenced to 4 years in jail for creating a page on Facebook to start riots. Let us know you think, and if you want to know more contact us through here, Facebook, and/or Twitter!

On November 24th of 1971 history was made. An unidentified man (who called himself D.B. Cooper) hijacked a plane traveling to Seattle, Washington from Portland, Oregon. He threatened to blow up the plane if he wasn’t given $200,000 cash. After he received the money in exchange for the passengers he ordered the pilot to head toward Mexico and only 30 miles into the trip he parachuted from the plane and “was never seen again—dead or alive. The crime was perfect if he lived, perfectly crazy if he didn’t”. After years of extensive investigations there has been little evidence found to identify the man who took hold of the Northwest Airlines plane in the fall of ’71. Although, recently a mother and daughter that claim to be Lynn Doyle Cooper’s niece and sister-in-law stepped forward. They recall the Thanksgiving of ’71 when their relative came to dinner with blood stains on his shirt and claimed to have been in a car accident. Marla Cooper (D.B.’s alleged niece) remembers a conversation between her uncles and father saying they no longer needed to worry about money. Is it possible that the main that was never seen again, dead or alive, has possibly been identified after all of these years. What do YOU think?

There are roughly 16 million thunder and lightning storms in the world every year, and for Connecticut summer time seems to be the most prominent time of year to have them. In the past few months alone, Connecticut has experienced quite the storms, causing damage to more things than we would have imagined. So, United Cleaning & Restoration would like to provide you with a few safety tips in case you or someone you know is caught right in the middle of a storm!

If you are driving during the storm, keep your windows rolled up.
If you are driving in a convertible find a safe place to stay until the storm has passed.
Do NOT shower or take a bath during a storm.
Stay away from windows, open areas, appliances, and other electronics.
If you are outside seek shelter immediately.
Avoid using regular phones (cellphones or cordless phones are safe to use).

Over the past years our society has been exposed to rapid advancements throughout all areas of technology, especially social networking sites, and we are headed in a whole new direction (taking everything from our laptops, iPhone’s, and Nooks with us). Because of the development the current generations are experiencing, United Cleaning & Restoration would like to share a few fun facts and statistics.

- If Facebook were a country, it would be the world’s 3rd largest country.
- One in every five couples meet online.
- Approximately 1 in every 13 people on EARTH have Facebook!
- 23% of Facebook users check their accounts on their phones before they get out of bed in the morning.
- The average number of videos watched on YouTube is 2 billion.
- 93% of marketers use social media for business.
- Social gamers will buy $6 million in virtual goods by 2013.
- If Wikipedia was made into a book it would be 2.25 million pages long, and would take over 123 years to read.
- 90% of consumers trust peer recommendations, while only 14% trust advertisements.
- 35 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.
- LinkedIn announced that it is adding 1 million new members every week, which equals one new member every second.
- Social media advertising spending will increase from $2.1 billion in 2010 to $8.3 billion by 2015.
- Google+ has 10 million users and says that 2 million of those users were new and signed up in the first 32-34 hours. That equals 17 people per SECOND.
- Now Facebook on the other hand had 12 million users by the end of 2006 and grew to 50 million by the end of 2007. Using the same math, they grew roughly 1.2 people per second.
- If Google+ continues to expand at the rate Facebook has over the years, then social networking will adapt a whole new meaning.

Suppose you had a small fire in your home, and your television, computer, or any other electronic device was damaged. Instead of having to completely replace the item, you may be able to contact a professional Connecticut company to clean the items. You want to be careful with who you call. First, you want to make sure that the company you have chosen is well experienced and will not damage your items any further. Then it would be a good idea to contact previous customers the company has dealt with to receive reliable feed back. To make things even easier, choose a company that works closely with Insurance Companies so you know the cleaning is covered. This way, there are no further headaches than the one you already have. Once you have chosen your company, they will inform you on their process of cleaning the electronic materials. For example, some companies, such as United Cleaning & Restoration, start by dismantling and stabilizing the materials. Stabilization neutralizes the soot’s corrosive properties and removes moisture. Electronics are then cleaned utilizing the top of the line O’Dell Cleaning Station. After the electronics are cleaned, they are put into a drying chamber. Once dry, electronics are tested, reassembled, packaged, and finally stored. For further information, contact UCR at 1-800-835-0740!

It was announced earlier this morning that the heat wave we previously discussed may set a record high. With the combination of the heat and humidity, the heat index may reach a high of 110 degrees between now and Saturday, and is expected to impact 50% of the country. People of all ages need to be aware of the health risks from this weather. At least two dozen people have already been killed from it, and unless people take caution they can be severely harmed and/or killed. To find out ways to stay safe, check out the previous United Cleaning & Restoration blog on the heat wave tips, or contact us through Facebook or Twitter!

The current heat wave is lingering over central United States and headed for the northeast. Although, a small bubble of cooler weather may hold off the heat in the northeast for Tuesday and Wednesday, it is expected to reach New England by Thursday. Temperatures throughout these states will possibly reach triple digits, causing the humidity to go through the roof. While the temperature rises in the northeastern parts of the country, the temperatures in central US will still remain just as high. So, until the heat wave is over, United Cleaning & Restoration would like to give a few pointers in order for you and your family to remain safe!

- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep hydrated and your body cool. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages that cause dehydration.
- Even if you are in great health, the heat can take a toll on your body. Therefore, you should not be doing exhausting activities during the sun’s peak hours of 11AM and 4PM. Plan for your activities during the coolest hours of the day.
- Spend as much time in air conditioned places as possible (especially the elderly)!
- Dress lightly, in light colors.
- Be sure to wear sunscreen when you are out in the sun to protect your skin.
- Spend time in the swimming pool or the ocean when possible to cool down, and avoid hot tubs or any hot water (including hot showers)!
- Eat frequently to keep food in your system, but make sure the meals you eat are small and low in protein.
- NEVER leave your children or pets in a parked car.
- Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If you or someone you knows needs medical help, contact 911 immediately.

Meteorologist, Gil Simmons, predicts not only severe weather for the state of Connecticut, but the possibility of a tornado. Simmons explains in his daily forecast for WTNH that there is potential for damaging wind gusts, and although it’s impossible to pin down where exactly the tornado threats are, the threats exist for the whole northeast, including Connecticut. Simmons encourages people to watch the sky this afternoon, primarily between 3PM and 4PM. He stated in his forecast that ‘the atmosphere has many severe weather ingredients available for severe thunderstorms, with hot and hazy conditions expected throughout the day’. The thunderstorms are expected throughout the afternoon and slow down as the sun falls. To read more about today’s weather conditions visit WTNH.

If you or someone you know experiences some sort of damage to their home or business from today’s weather contact a local Connecticut Restoration Company.
